bg tournament movements

the usual is a KO or knockout. DE or double elimination is an extension of this form. these are the simplest to run
a swiss movement starts with everyone playing and like records are matched (usually with a preference for not repeating an earlier match).
the modified swiss (ie old indianapolis tourney) was a swiss in which a 3rd loss eliminated you from the event. after finishing (usually 8 rounds) the plan was to go to a KO format. this had the inherent flaw that somebody had a really good swiss and was like 8-0. the 8-0 guy argues that he should get a bye into the finals/semi(whatever). the rules never stipulated what to do about this. my feeling is that there should be enough rounds to eliminate to the desired ko size (call it 8 rounds for sake of argument) --- a guy that goes 5-0 should be in the KO event as well as a 5-1 or 5-2 record. he gets to take off after the 5th match --- that should be enough of an award for doing so well. There would be problems with tied players and filling the bracket in most cases and those tie breaking problems need be addressed in the conditions of contest. (difficult --- as the director doesn't know the event size until it has begun --- hey, that's what they get paid so well to do) an odd n# of participants is always a problem, so there should be someone that might play or not (possibly a director becomes a participant?)
i believe neil has advocated for the swiss throughout with the 3rd loss eliminating a player from the event.
