Actually, I understand that "good" players are typically right far more than 1/3 of the time and that the % is statistically significant.

True, provided you're playing against non-random opponents. It looks like in that competition, many competitors were non-random. Against Unflappable Random Opponent (URO), you can't do any better than even money (in the long run).
