You are certainly correct that there is more to the problem than just "Will Blue escape before White enters?" But understanding the answer to that question is very important for assessing the proper play.

As for rec.games.backgammon, it is nearly dead, as indeed is most of USENET. There are trolls but there is also a little bit of interesting activity.
