Question for Chuck Bower

Chess transcripts can not be copyrighted in the US. So, I believe that matches / positions can not be copyrighted. Anyone could use them in their own book. I'm not sure about rollouts. I'm inclined to say that they could be used as well. If enough information was presented including the seed, the book writer could theoretically reproduce the rollouts. So, it would be difficult to argue that the rollout was proprietary.
Chuck,
What would happen in the world of science if someone wrote a paper or book using data compiled by someone else that was publically available? Would that be legal or not? How would that be viewed ethically in the scientific community?
