Lenny ""Condemn" is a bit much. Unless you show me somebody trying to become a television mogul, and changing the rules in the middle of scheduled competitions."

Neil replies..I believe you are referring to the WSOB. While the WSOB has my full support and I wish it to succeed both this year and in upcoming years, and I have to state and am using the only name I post under here to do so, that many things in the organisation and execution of this year's WSOB have contributed to doubt and loss of confidence in most aspects and in most everything associated with that event.

Delays in starting the events and delays during the events, along with changes of procedures for qualifying (at least as I've observed) and most unfortunate changes of dates for the playoffs in London, have all contributed to players simply deciding that the WSOB isn't worth their time and effort to play this year.

Lenny "Bridge has taken advantage of the internet, of all things, to deliver the major events to anybody who wants them. Just look at what Bridge Base Online or Ourgame(Chinese provider) has done with the Bermuda Bowl. With no rights fees being charged. Local promoters, and national associations, benefit from this top down approach."

Neil replies... BBO is an awesome place for anyone who plays bridge. I have greatly improved my play from being there. Bridge is much better organised on the US and world levels than is BG. Some of the reasons for this is that it is a bigger game with more players, but the lack of organisation of BG also contributes to many prospective players leaving the game or gradually losing interest.

Lenny "As opposed to the laughable balkanization we currently see in backgammon, as european promoters fire their miniature squirt guns at each other. A strong worldwide federation, given current technology, is easily the best way to promote the game."

Neil replies... Some US directors also have miniature squirt guns as do some of US players. This is why I caution against petty bickering. Look at how much bickering we had here trying to decide what to try to rate. We've decided to do as good a job of rating Championship events as we can starting this year, but where are these ratings now, and has the Madison big Swiss elim been rated? Is my help needed to go over draw sheets and input data?

A strong worldwide BG federation and one which makes great use of the internet is a wonderful idea..but utopia does not come quickly. Better to start smaller, ie on the US level. This is why I will most likely give the USBGF my full support, and while I like what I have read so far, I need to hear more.
