I've been working very hard at improving my cube play--first trying to understand cube theory, then trying to apply what I've learned to posted positions, and, finally, trying to become adept enough to use this knowledge over the board.

As far as understanding the theory, I've made great strides, but my understanding is limited to the bare basics--and it is simply understanding, not mastery.

Applying what I've learned to posted positions is still laborious at this point. As you say, there's so much to memorize--take points, gammon values, cube adjustments, etc. Even memorizing the all the formulas and shortcuts (e.g. Neil's numbers, Keith Count, epc) to derive these values is difficult. I make a lot of mistakes, and often have to work through things several times to get them right. I also have trouble estimating wins and gammons. I'm getting better, but my estimates can be way off, especially when it comes to estimating gammons won or lost, which just undermines the entire process.

Being able to use this stuff to make good decisions over the board is something of a pipe dream at this point. Still, as a former teacher and musician, I'm aware of how tremendously powerful simple repetition can be. Do something a thousand times, or ten thousand, and you can achieve great things. At least I'm developing a consistent methodology of how to approach a position, and that has helped, even if I don't yet have all my tools sharpened and ready to use.

Guys like Neil and Kit simply amaze me.
