Wisconsin Backgammon Championship Tournament format

Can anyone explain me tournament format in Madison? I know it is hybrid between swiss and bracket but don't know details.

We just have 1st tournament in Croatia and have 36 players total. First part was five round of swiss and second part was simple bracket (semiconduct, first play vs 16th, 2nd vs 15th etc) but I found it unfair bcuz finally player who won whole tournament was 3-2 in first part and player who was only one with all five wins in first part and have 6-0 lost his 7th match and fall out before semis.

We will try to improve this system for next year and I appreciate all your help. Thanks.
