In Response To: 4-ply 1st pass and then a 5-ply (6stones)

XGR+ is about 3 times as fast as 5-ply and Xavier's testing indicates that it is likely just as strong, if not a bit stronger. Preliminary Depreli testing of XGR+ indicates that it also is just as strong if not a bit stronger. I'm sure that you'll see an update once Michael has finished adding XGR+ to his bot comparison test (not an easy task to add it on the fly) and that Xavier will post the update here http://www.extremegammon.com/independentstudies.asp

I currently prefer to use a ply setting for 1st pass, and then a roller setting for 2nd pass, since I want to see if the decision changes (noting I use default settings where .02 or worse is an error, and that for plays that are closer than that, I can always look at them in deeper detail than 4 ply as I step thru the match in detail).

What settings will I end up preferring for i7 type computers? I am not sure yet. Most likely for when wanting a detailed analysis, I'll make the first pass 5 ply or XGR+ (if XGR+ holds up as somewhat stronger) and then the 2nd pass will be some sort of custom short truncated setting, most likely 3 ply play, and 4 ply cube. If I am doing an overnight analysis, I'll likely just run 2nd pass as a 1296 game 3 ply full RO.

For users with "basic" computers, ie an older 1 core, or dual core, the world class setting will serve them well for detailed match analysis. IMHO.
