How can you tell if you're playing a bot online?

It is impossible to tell if someone is getting help from a bot...especially if he is smart and doesn't always make the No. 1 play and makes it a point to make some bad plays when it doesn't matter. It is possible to use a bot virtually without any delay, so that isn't a clue either.
I don't believe anyone should play for serious money on line for this reason, and I don't trust major tournament or other competitions on line for this reason either.
I do hope to eventually see some intercollegiate and club competitions on line, but in every case I would want to know that there is an official, or the teacher, monitoring the players so ensure that no bot is being used. In addition to bots people could also cheat simply by getting help from a better player or by using reference guides such as match-equity tables, take point tables, POG tables, etc.
