Yes, in general, spectators should shut their trap and contact the director regarding improprieties. But speaking up to the players about certain basic things is just common sense. If I look down and notice that both players have just written different scores on their scoresheets, or different match lengths, it does not require the director to tell the players that they have a conflict they need to resolve. If the players set up the board for a new game and the initial position is not set correctly and they don't immediately notice, it is once again just common sense to mention it. If the match is being played with a clock and I notice that the clock had been set to Pause for a break and has not been unpaused when play was resumed, I'll mention it. Sorry, but I don't buy the "there's no exceptions" rule. The director has enough to worry about without being bothered with such minutia.
