In the US there are no hard and fast rules about being forced up to the higher division. It is completely up to the individual directors to 'police' this. There is some latitude given especially based on the size of the events won. If you cash in a 28-player Open event in Iowa, it may be perfectly acceptable to play in the Intermediate in Las Vegas.

One place that is often strictly controlled is the 'Amateur' or 'Limited' Jackpots, where usually anyone that has cashed in an Open event or Masters Jackpot can no longer enter these lower Jackpot events.
