The formulaic thinking that "it's 4th down so we have to kick" is what we are trying to get away from. "You have to put points on the board" is another formula that needs to be scrapped.

The risk of not scoring a touchdown on 4th and goal from the 1 is far less than going forward after only scoring 3 points. The value of the fact that you'll often get the ball back in good position after turning it over on downs can't be discounted.
