e stands for "Each" inner board. If you write E, it will be understood that the doublets are moved in pairs 24-22(2), 6-4(2). You are moving one checker in the far inner board twice 24-20 rather than in a pair. So, the move gets a small letter e to distinguish this difference. This is a very handy convention. Another similar example would be N (Near) 13-11(2), 6-4(2) and n 13-9, 6-4(2). A couple of days ago I used o (Outer / into and out of the outer board) 13-7, 8-5(2) to distinquish from O 13-10(2), 8-5(2).
