Nackgammon is a perfect example of what I am talking about. But try putting all 5 checkers on your 6 point on your 8 point, and start out with 3 blots in your opponent's inner board, and see how the game goes when you play that way.
The, take those 5 checkers on the 13 point and scatter them wherever you like.
I have actually come up with 5 starting positions that are very, very different from anything you might imagine and have played them all against EG. It rates my moves just like "normal" backgammon and I can see the logic of its moves very well. So the bots do have some understanding of the goals (even if they may be wrong).
