While DMP is useful for understanding the mechanics of containment, I should add that cube access is relevant to understanding containment problems in general to the extent that it changes the object of the game. Your strategy changes somewhat depending upon whether your goal is to achieve a close-out and take 15 checkers off, or if your goal is to achieve a sufficiently threatening position so that you can give a strong double. For example, in containment problems that involve priming, you'll often slot the back of the prime and leave a few shots when you do not have cube access because you must complete the game and get to 100% wins, while when you do have cube access, you usually do not want to leave the immediate losers because your goal is to get to 75% wins and cash and so leaving a few jokers for your opponent is not required to get there. But that does not mean risks should never be taken with cube access. Sometimes the best way to reach the efficient double point in positions with a high point open or opponent at the prime's edge and few builders in range is to simply slot the last point. You know that you will never need to actually cover the slot because you can give an efficient double if it is missed.
