Your two reasons, (a) behind in the pipcount = harder to play, and (b) fan = steam, sound better than I think they are, though I agree the effects exist and in the direction you're stating. However, I believe that combined they're smaller than the effect of depriving the opponent a misplay or half-misplay option not only on the next roll but any time they roll any 4 from the roof in the future (until you make your 4pt in the alternate universe). In other words, I wasn't just addressing the act of hitting another checker but also the act of making an inside point.
Against certain opponents I suppose (b) might be worth more, but I have found that most of the agitation seems to occur during the fanning period; once having entered they feel fine as long as their position is stable, and sometimes happier than when they started if they emerge with an advanced anchor or other nugget (as Richard touched on) out of the deal. If they go through a longer period of fanning (and, say, end up with an ace-point game), the irritation could have a cumulative effect, but that period also represents more rolls in which they could not misplay.
That said, it will probably never be proved one way or the other :)
