I can't find a rollout for this position. Maybe Paul Weaver has one; he is probably studied more third and fourth roll 65 positions than I have. Indeed, I think he has written a couple of articles on them.

Typically, when coming off the roof with 65 early in the game, Bar/14 is right unless Opp has a checker in one's own outer board as here. R (Run, Bar/14) leaves a double-direct shot, allowing White to develop as he naturally moves around, so Blue can't do that here.

After entering with the 5, then, it is necessary to choose between U (Up, 24/18) and D (Down, 13/7). D is usually the right idea by default, because U produces the three-checker split-position of 24pt 20pt 18pt and gives White too many numbers to hit on two key points (63 62 61 21 33 11). If the underlined point is the 21pt, it's a little safer, and if the underlined point is the 22pt, it's safer still. (White can still hit a second checker on a lower point, but it is less costly for Blue when he fails to hit back.)

Blue having four checkers on the midpoint instead of his original five offers a distributional counterargument for U, but I don't think it's enough. D looks better on balance.

If you give Blue a 64 instead of a 65 (for reasons mentioned two paragraphs ago), that will enhance the value of U relative to D, and U might even be better.
