It makes a difference, though, where the offense starts. If they improve their field position from the 10-yard line to the 1-yard line, I doubt they improve their chances of making the FG by all that much.

But if they're on the 25-yard line (a 40+ yard FG) and you let them get down to the 1, you've probably boosted their chances by quite a bit.

So, much like giving a technically incorrect cube, whether you allow the opponent to score in these situations depends in part on the chance that they will make a mistake by scoring instead of just stopping at the 1-yard line. If you could have forced them to kick from the 25 but instead they get to kick from the 1, you've given up quite a bit of equity by allowing the free yardage.
