Another bowl game weirdness

Right, the refs lost a down. That part they figured out by going to the replay booth. (And if this were in the years prior to replay? Maybe they would have discussed it and decided amongst themselves.)
My main point was, if they actually had missed incrementing the down marker, how could they correct it after a play was executed on the basis of the incorrect down marker? In particular, if they are going to adjust, I would think they should nullify the subsequent play.
What if they had marked the ball location incorrectly and then a play was run. Would they have adjusted for the line-of-scrimmage location after the play?
Actually there may be some analogies in BG, as in the cube being turned in the Crawford game, then nullified without replaying the game. Of course in that case there was no official making the decision in the first place that the cube was on 2, then later changing his/her mind. Then there is the situation where players are playing to the wrong final score. Again, it should never happen that an official tells them to play to the wrong score and later (after the match has started) change it, right?? :)
