Agree; fake FG's are difficult to model.
BTW, I looked up the actual situation here:
http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/playbyplay?gameId=300010002&period=5
Auburn had already scored 3 points in their OT period. NW'ern had 4th and goal from the 5. A successful FG only gets them into another OT. Obviously a TD wins the game.
A lot of people can make an FG of this length (22 yarder). Thus Auburn did have to contend with that possibility. OTOH, a FG only ties in a game Auburn now should be considered the favorite (in OT), so protecting against a fake or even a botched FG attempt should be in their sights. But the pressure of the situation sometimes blurs that. Sounds like Auburn's defense did their job of trying to prevent the six.
The coach made a gutsy call. That ought to be worth something in a profession overloaded with risk avoiders.
Sorry to see a member of my home conference go down in such a close and exciting situation, particularly in a game they were supposed to be outmatched (Auburn favored by 9). But, hey, they did cover the spread. :)
