Bar/17* 11/7(2) 8/4 is automatic to me. It would be unlikely for an expert in the 70s to have made any other play, because we were so prime-oriented.

I might make this play even if White's builders weren't all stacked on the same point: for example, move one of her 6pt spares to the 7pt and another to the 5pt! It rubs me the wrong way to leave the four checkers on the 11pt and 10pt in such an inefficient location, 6 apart from the 5pt and 4pt, none bearing on an unmade inside point.

I mentioned here a few weeks ago that I have had to learn, over time, that making/covering inside points is more valuable than I used to think. Neil said that he had come from the opposite perspective, which surprised me. Perhaps he started playing after I did or he lived in a less prime-oriented part of the country. Not that it really matters, since we seem to balance our priorities pretty much the same now.
