That is EXACTLY the method I recommended (and it was mutually agreed to) when Mike Corbett, Jake Jacobs and I got down to the final three of the Super-Jackpot in Las Vegas about eight(?) years ago.

(Jake would remember exactly when because he still remembers how lucky I was to beat him, though he has added some embellishments to the story; for example, I don't remember a hedge :)

Winner of the bye pays out 1/12 of the prize pool to each of the other two players, so that everyone starts the "semis" with 1/3 of the prize fund in equity. That's all there is to it. (The players can still hedge in the individual matches from there, if they like.)

In our case, 1st place = 24k, 2nd place 12k, 3rd place nothing. I ended up with 27k (more than I could have won without a settlement), so naturally I think that resolution rocks. (Mike got 12 - 6 = 6k, Jake got 3k.)
