The suggestions by Nack, Neil, and Sam clearly are more fair as far as the monetary prize distribution but they do not address the fact that it is not equitable for each player, if they value winning the tournament for more than the monetary gain alone, for there to be a bye into the finals. How many of us play in tournaments for the money? Very few. How many play to win? Most. Why not employ a method that leaves each player with a roughly equal chance to finish in each place and gives them same monetary equity whether they get a bye or not? Let skill determine who wins the tournament whenever possible, remove the luck of the bye. It is easy and clean and can be done as quickly.
