Correct on the interception, they would have gotten the ball at the line of scrimmage (20 yard line) had the ball not been intercepted. But one has to be careful and intelligent in doing this -- there have been instances where a defender deflects the ball and it is caught by the receiver (or one of the receiver's teammates) or one can overcorrect the other way and have it ruled a reception/fumble when you are trying to make it look like an incompletion. As an aside, I thought it telling of Saban's mindset on the game when he took the initial kickoff and then, subsequently, tried a trick play on 4 and 10 at his own 20.
There are many instances of such intellectual oversights in football -- college and pro. I love the situations where some runner/receiver is struggling for extra yards when corralled by 4-5 defenders and precious seconds counting down at the end of the half or the end of the game. When going down is inevitable just get down so a time out can be called, the ball can be spiked, or, in college ball, when you already have a first down and the clock will stop while the chains are moved. Such struggling against all odds can also be conducive to having the ball stripped.
Not sure where you got the idea about McCoy being the 3rd Texas quarterback -- he took almost every snap on the year and was widely regarded as one of the best players in the country -- certainly the best quarterback.
