I obviously misinterpreted your suggested reason for the asterisk.
In the Big 12 Championship game the end of game clock ran out on an incomplete pass out of bounds with Nebraska ahead 12-10. Nebraska thought they'd won. Replay showed the ball striking the face of the stands out of bounds with 0:01 left and Texas made a successful field goal attempt to win.
Oklahoma had already lost two games this season before they played and lost to Texas. Though the rivalry is always a great battle I think Texas would have won the game regardless.
Unlike last year when Texas beat Oklahoma soundly in the head-to-head game before Texas lost on the last second fluke play to an undefeated Texas Tech team. Somehow the Big-12 saw fit to advance Oklahoma to the Big-12 Championship game -- and, ultimately, they advanced to the BCS Championship game. In every other conference in the United States, Texas would have gone to the Big-12 Championship based on the head-to-head win.
Needless to say, across the board, in all conferences and in the BCS, college football rankings, ratings, bowls, etc. leave much to be desired in the objective resolution of the champions -- conference and national.
