I am reminded of a conversation I had with a guy several year's ago.
In multi-roll bearoff situations (not 2 or 3 roll, but 6 or 7 roll situations) he would often times smooth his distribution or fill voids even when he could take two checkers off.
I asked him of his philosophy. He said he was protecting against a bad roll later where he might not be able to take two checkers off.
So, I pointed out to him that he was making/taking/ensuring a bad roll now to protect against only the potential of a bad roll later. What if he subsequently never rolled a bad number? Only rolled big doubles as an example. He had cost himself at least one additional roll by not taking two checkers off earlier when he had the chance. He took note and rarely did it again.
(And, for the snipers, I know there are circumstances, particularly in the last roll or two or maybe even three, where this is not correct; but, generally speaking, early in non-contact bearoffs it is correct.)
