I don't think a checker belongs on the 3pt either (which is why I "instantly" chose the 5pt) -- I'm aligned with you in the strategic sense -- but the play has value tactically to minimize Opp's numbers to hit and cover her 4pt. That's why IMO 5/3* is a strongly competing play.
