Why would it depend on if it is a first round or finals?

In theory it may be correct to play a faster game if there are a limited number of rebuys. (esp. if you're losing big at that point in the current match)

If time is very short I think it is worth keeping a running count from the very first roll of the game.

Maybe time wouldn't be short if you did this the entire match. It's very easy sometimes and of course the more you do it the easier it becomes.
