I find it quite tricky to judge the timing here. In this sort of position, hitting loose and getting hit back is good if the opponent has already filled in his board, but gets increasingly bad the further back the opponent's prime is. That would argue for waiting with something like 9/6 7/3 rather than hitting loose with 8/1*, postponing the risk of getting hit back until the opponent's prime is further advanced. On the other hand, waiting risks being forced to break the 6-prime and hit loose at the same time. If the opponent then hits back and jumps our 5-prime at the same time, then we're really up the creek.

I think I will wait, to give my opponent's position a chance to deteriorate. I like 9/6 7/3 because it allows me to play almost all non-doubles next roll without hitting if I decide I don't want to hit.
