Subtle position from "Boot Camp"

I recently posted a variant of a position from Trice's Backgammon Boot Camp which, judging by the scarcity of hits, some of you may have missed. I rolled out Trice's original position and my variant and the results were quite different despite the superficially small changes. By the way, Trice's comments (presumably based on Snowie rollouts) are contradicted by the GNU rollout.

My variant

Trice's position

I'd be interested if someone could explain how a human could arrive at the right play in both cases. The top play in Trice's position is about 0.03 behind in my variant, and vice versa.
