For Backgammon Openings, Paul and I researched a number of 61P-xxx-21 positions, where xxx is a move that splits with an ace or deuce.

Without completely giving away the answer, I'll just say that 61P-32Z-21 is on one extreme of the results, and 61P-51S-21 is on the other extreme. 61P-41S-21 (the featured position here) is in between those two extremes.

In my experience, the majority of players, when confronted with this situation OTB, make the splitting play (24/23 13/11) in all three positions; however, it is not even second best! The three positions in question are diagrammed below.
