Hit Loose?

During the course of analyzing my errors from a recent match I realized that one of my issues was knowing when to hit loose in my home board and when to pass up the hit for another play. I started varying one of the positions I had played wrong and eventually ended up with the following two positions. I am really interested in the "whys" of choosing the best play in each of these related positions.

Position 1

is Player 2

score: 0
pip: 145
15 point match
pip: 154
score: 0

is Player 1
XGID=-a-a-BD-C--BcB---d-bb-b-B-:0:0:1:32:0:0:0:15:0
to play 32

eXtreme Gammon Version: 1.12

Position 2

is Player 2

score: 0
pip: 145
15 point match
pip: 156
score: 0

is Player 1
XGID=-a-a-BD-C--AcC---d-bb-b-B-:0:0:1:23:0:0:0:15:0
to play 23

eXtreme Gammon Version: 1.12
