Why not use A-Y for points 1-25? I admit my memory is better than average, but it took less than half a second to memorize.

Because you're memory is better than average. =)

The truth is I tried this initially and the people I tested it with balked at it. It's simply much easier for (most) people to remember an association, even an absurd one, than a "random" assignment. I learned this long ago when I used to be a high school teacher, and my guinea pigs reminded me of it here. The bottom line is that it doesn't matter what symbol is used as long as it can be remembered, so why not use what people say they remember. In several cases, my original mnemonics were trumped by their suggestions because they worked better.
