A conundrum

Okay, I'm making some assumptions here, so forgive me if they are wrong.

My feel from reading here is that if one is on the bar and rolling against a five-point board and rolls an entering number but misreads the dice so as to think he danced and therefore picks up his dice while remaining on the bar, that the majority opinion here would be "too bad, illegal move, you have to live with it" (assuming the opponent wished to condone the illegal move of course).

On the other hand, if one is playing with clocks, and is on the bar against a closed board, routinely hitting his plunger while the board is closed- if, when the board first opens up, he accidentally hits his plunger without rolling, I feel the majority opinion among our readership is that this should be corrected and he should re-roll, regardless of the opponent's wishes.

Why the distinction when the end result is the same?
