The $300K was the team total - split into different sessions.
I'm just thinking what effect we would have seen on ERs, had you been able to pool 10 times the money you did.
For one individual to put up $300K I agree with you. Pointless. Except if you're Gus and you're feeling lucky!
A few years ago there was a documentary on Danish TV where you followed Mads Andersen visiting Gus in Vegas for the WSOP main event. Gus busted out early in the tournament ($10K entry fee). While the other Danes kept playing, Gus retired to his room for a high stakes BG money-session (I cannot recall who he was playing, or if they kept the opponent anon) - a few hours later Gus was up $50K for that session, ending his day with a $40K+
Getting high stakes BG action from high stakes poker players seem to be something that Gus, Mads and Sander is always up to :-) I also recall Mads playing the Hendon Mob for $1K a point during a poker tournament weekend.
I really have no idea what kind of stakes the players on the World team are used to playing (or willing to play), but my guess is that its very differentiated.
If you look at the Danes not playing the event, a couple of those missing would for sure accept some high stakes action - as Christian mentioned. But then again, some of the strongest players in DK would certainly not play $1K per point like stakes :-)
But then again, when you have these team match-ups, if you can get a mix of both players on each side, and then like Stick pointed out having each side so strong that they think of them selves as favorites, then you should be able to raise funds by having players covering for each other (or even have backers outside of the teams).
