I'll take a shot at a rewrite. Let me note that having used JellyFish, Snowie and Gnubg, I'm one of those who never thought GNU Backgammon's interface was difficult or especially nonintuitive to use.
Most top players use one or more of these three programs. All three can play on an expert ("world class") level; create, import and analyze positions and entire matches; and roll out checker play and cube decisions. They differ in "bells and whistles" offered, ease of use and flexibility.
ExtremeGammon. Cost: $50. First introduced: [date]. Last major revision: [date]. Bug fixes and enhancements: ongoing. Main advantages: noticeably more accurate analysis overall than GNU Backgammon and Snowie; noticeably faster analysis and rollouts. Download and more information at publisher's website: [url].
GNU Backgammon. Cost: free. First introduced: [date]. Last major revision [date]. Bug fixes and enhancements: ongoing. Main advantage: open source code. Main drawback: some users of older bots find the Gnubg interface, with its many user-settable options, less easy to use. Download and more information at publisher's website: [url].
Snowie Backgammon. Cost: $365. [website]. First introduced: [date]. Last major revision [...]. Bug fixes and enhancements: none planned. Main drawback: inability to play "at the score" in match score rollouts. Download and more information at publisher's website: [url.].
