Chuck: Independent of the cheating possibilities, using a cellphone during a match (particularly a non-clocked match, but even a clocked one) is, IMO, simply rude. When you sit down to play backgammon, is it too much to ask that you simply play backgammon?

It is precisely this rudeness that has created my current draconian policy regarding the use of cell phones in my classes. Essentially, they must be completely off (like being in an airplane for takeoff/landing) unless the person has some good reason for needing to have a phone on, in which case they must keep their phone on vibrate. The penalties for violating the rule have escalated to the absurd, but on the plus side, I don't have any more freshmen sending and receiving texts during class, and the more reasonable among my students have applauded the fact that I've taken a stand.
