Backgammon is a Race

More than thirty years ago, Bill Robertie summed up his philosophy of backgammon, "Backgammon is a race."
White trails in the race; therefore White should hit. Hitting allows White to begin to catch up in the race.
Although hitting leaves a few return shots (the exact number of shots is obtainable only by asking Sam Pottle), they are no big deal, considering Black's pathetic excuse for a two-point board. If Black hits a return shot, you have a good chance to hit back and/or make a second anchor.
Hitting gives you a chance to make a four-prime with three Black checkers behind it.
You usually need a very good reason not to hit, and you do not have that here.
