Help understanding the right play

Staying back on the 22 point is in keeping with Yellow's trailing in the race. It maintains greater contact and gives Black more bad entering numbers from the bar. I like 13/7* too.
As a general principle, if you are trailing in the race and have a better board then you are not losing much by getting hit. Therefore the gain from slotting (and hopefully making, on the next roll) the middle of your prime outweighs the risk. If you were far ahead in the race then the story would be different. You would lose one of your main assets (your race lead) by getting hit. Buttoning up and reducing contact would then be the order of the day.
