I think it is fair to say today, that the absolute elite players have acknowledged that penholders are at a slight strategic disadvantage. This has been overcome by extreme skill by many of the best asian players earlier, but clearly the number of asian top players with the "European" grip has increased. Following Wang Haos lead among those that do stick with, or starts out choosing, penhold, the reverse penhold backhand, using the second side of the racket, is definitely gaining in popularity at the top level. Among the worlds top 15 today there is 3 playing with penhold grip, and only one of those, Ma Lin, rarely (if ever) play the reverse penhold backhand.
