I know Bill pretty well and we spoke at length in Las Vegas. He is a person of integrity, and when he says he does not pass judgment here, it can be taken as fact. Bill is simply giving his opinion on what he believes is best for the USBGF, backgammon and all involved. An opinion is all it is. He is entitled to this opinion. But ultimately the decisions rest with Rod and the USBGF.
There are two separate issues that were originally raised by Bill. One being what is for the good of the mission of the USBGF, the other being that these events are a distraction and will be consuming Rod and potentially diverting him from his focus on the important work that the USBGF needs someone in his position to do. On the second point, I can say that Rod is absolutely focused on doing the job and doing it well. He remains active, engaged and productive. These concerns are quite simply unfounded at this time. I can easily see why Bill or anyone else might think the same, but there is also the other side of the coin - the possibility that someone going through such a difficult time in their life might actually step up and shine in such a situation as the USBGF may in fact be the thing serving as the distraction and help fill the day with something enjoyable, productive and fulfilling and provide an escape from the ugly mess that exists elsewhere in life. Only Rod knows what he is thinking and feeling and what is right for him. But I will say that from everything I've observed to date, he has always put the greater good of the USBGF mission first.
The USBGF will continue forward in line with its official statement on the matter.
