I agree. Here's one possible way to remember that V is a good play here. Making the 5-point is the "natural" play, but because the opponent has the 5-point made and the race is even, an up play may be slightly better than leaving a bar-point blot. Then I think it is often the case that against this particular formation (stripped 8 point, relatively few builders), V is slightly better than U.
