In Response To: Comments on the Covlin Story (Bill Riles)

Bill wrote: I find it most ironic that those attacking myself and Gregg for rushing to judgement -- despite both of us stating carefully and specifically that we did not know the facts and were not making any judgement -- were, in fact, emotional and judgemental themselves.

(1) I saw no one attack Gregg for his opinion on what Covlin or the USBGF should do. Perhaps that is because Gregg expressed none? In fact he said "Not commenting on Rod's situation at all, but..." and "Again, I have no knowledge or opinion on the actual facts of Rod's situation." As far as I can see, Gregg only spoke to the use of the phrase "innocent before proven guilty."

(2) As for you "not making any judgement," well, it seems to me that of course you have. Not with regard to innocence or guilt of a crime that may or not have occurred (I accept your statement that you have judged "one party" neither innocent nor guilty), but with regard to what it would be "appropriate" for Rod and "prudent" of the USBGF to do: "temporarily resign" and "suspend," in your opinion. Likewise has the USBGF made a judgment, that Rod should for the time being continue serving in his post.

I'm assuming that both yours and the USBGF's were opinions reached after consideration and deliberation, i.e., they were judgments.

(3) In the thread you cited, most of "those attacking" you for "rushing to judgement" -- in other words, those who disagreed with your opinion that Rod should resign or be suspended -- were neither "emotional" nor were they "judgemental" with regard to the New York Post-alleged crime. Rather, the greater number of participants in the thread, it seems to me, disagreed with your judgment that allegations and insinuations that have to date only appeared in the New York Post* are sufficient cause for Rod to remove himself or be removed from his post.

Absent any corroboration of the Post story, Bill, although your opinion is, I think, well-intentioned and not ill considered, I'm inclined to agree with Rich and Alfred that the USBGF need take no action at this time.

*As of today, some other publications, not including the New York Times, Newsday or the New York Daily News, have repeated the Post story, but have added nothing to it.
