The relationship between USBGF and ABT

Rich provided a great description of both organizations. I will go a step further and say that since the ABT Directors have been running great tournaments in the US for some time, the USBGF is dedicated to supporting those directors and those effort and to helping them be even more successful, and of course, the USBGF is careful not to appear to be in any way in competition or in conflict with the ABT.
In that regard, several ABT-affiliated directors (including Pat Gibson, Jeb Horton, Chiva and others) are very much involved with the USBGF as members of the board of directors, board of governors, and/or on various committees. In addition, committee chairmen such as myself have discussed what we are doing directly with ABT directors including Bill Davis, Carol Cole, and Howard Markowtitz to get their input and thinking BEFORE we actually finish our discussions. We want and invite their input and participation. (For example, I gave copies of our new Standards of Ethical Practice to Carol and Howard for their review and comments BEFORE it went to the Board for approval.)
There are some differences of opinion relative to openly promoting backgammon in the US--how to do it and how it will affect tournament publicity etc., but it is clear that everyone wants to see the game grow; everyone would like to see a more coordinated effort to promote growth, good sportsmanship, and continuity not only in the US, but between players and tournaments all over the world, and with that in mind, we are working on ways to accomplish those goals in a manner that will be sensitive to everyone's needs.
