Real Backgammon

I am with Falafel here. Unless you are one of the world-class players at the point of trying to eliminate the last few tiny holes from your game, there are better things to fill your head with than a bunch of second- and third-move rollout results. It is like the player who memorizes the entire match equity table but cannot estimate his wins and gammons within 5%.
I am also skeptical that there are many generalized lessons to be learned from the first couple moves. If we established conclusively that it is correct to split with 41 but to slot with 21, what have we learned? We have learned nothing except that a specific slot is too loose in a specific position. Unlike a middle-game position, where you can often learn something by playing it out a few times, there is little point in playing out variations from an opening position because the game is too unformed to draw any conclusions. If there really were some grand concept to explain why one opening move is better than another, the two moves wouldn't be a mere .02 apart.
