In part I agree, in part not. For myself, I know that more gains could be made by eliminating middle- and end-game blunders and mistakes then by eliminating opening mistakes. But: (1) Openings lend themselves to easier systematic study; (2) By contrasting similar opening positions and the rollout results, lessons can be learned extend beyond the merely knowing play X is better than Y.

As an example of the latter, there was recently a discussion of the 32 play after the sequence Point (with 61, 31, 42, or 53) 64 (8/2 6/2) 32 I formulated my own answer to explain the rollout results, Nack provided a more elaborate answer, and with some other posts I learned a few concepts to look for that generalize beyond the opening.

So I am a bit in the middle on this.
