Real Backgammon

I'll side step the analogies and just note a couple of things about backgammon. First, part of the equation is which is easier to fix, the small errors in the opening that add up over time, or the blunders that persist because we're constantly encountering new positions with subtle changes that can make big differences? Opening moves are essentially static (I'll avoid using "definitive" this time, and trust my meaning is understood), and it's much easier to hit a fixed target.
My second point is that, unlike the presented analogies, backgammon study isn't an either/or proposition. It's easy enough to do both, especially since most of the "work" in opening theory is done by the computer. Plenty of time to study your blunders while the CPU is spinning on a rollout. In addition, opening study lends itself more easily to collaboration. It's easy to to identify what needs to be done, spread the work load over several people, and organize and present the data. This isn't so true of addressing blunders.
