London Bookmakers See Windfall in Backgammon Event

Bookmakers are celebrating all over London today after American backgammon player Jacob Rice led his team to an amazing come from behind victory in the Tandem Team Championships on Safe Harbour Games. The event featured teams from throughout the world competing for the coveted prize. The final matched Mr. Rice's team the Executioners and the Gammonzone team. Seven best-two-of-three matches were held with the first team to win four sets declared the winner. After 6 sets the contest stood at three apiece. The final matched Mr. Rice against Cubehead from the Gammonzone team. Apparently punters from throughout the world made excessively large wagers on Cubehead overloading the bookmakers and creating a very risky position for many. Said Bob Grasp of Safe Bets, 'The early action was all on the Executioners, but when it came down to Mr. Rice against Cubehead in the final the money started flowing the other way and we could not stop it, even when we made Cubehead a 4 to 1 favorite. It was as if the match were already over before it began. We finally had to remove the item from the wagering board suspecting that there might be shenanigans involved. It was perhaps the largest position we have ever held on any event other than a World Cup final. It obviously was on the up and up, as most punters lost significantly. It is nice to have such a huge cushion going into the 2012 World Cup.' One punter leaving the shop after the match was heard to say; "I just can't believe Stick (Mr. Rice) actually won a final.'
