Great position pair (but spoiler)

From opening position move one of your checkers back from 13 to 16. Now you have 21 to play. What is your play? Do you go back to opening setup?

I'd be surprised if 13/11 6/5, duplicating 4s, is not the right play. It might even be right if White owns her 5pt.

I am reminded of one of my favorite pair of third roll positions:

1O ' '1O2X4X '2X ' ' '4O

2X ' ' ' '5O '3O1O ' '5X

43Z-31P-51

1O ' '1O2X4X '2X ' ' '4O

2X ' ' ' '5O '3O ' '1O5X

32S-31P-51

In the left-hand position, Blue should not slot. (As I recall, 21/16 9/8 is best, and 21/15 is second best, and none of the top five plays slot.) Blue duplicates his own 4s. (However, Blue should slot anyway if the position is 32S-65R-51, where White does not own her 5pt.)

In the right-hand position, Blue should slot with 21/16 6/5 and it is hugely correct. This play gives him good 6s, 5s and 2s to cover a point or hit back.

With that knowledge, look at your 13pt-to-16pt adjusted opening position (shown below), and it will be clear why I thought slotting (13/11 6/5) with 21 seems so clear.

2O ' ' ' '5X '3X1O ' '4O

2X ' ' ' '5O '3O ' ' '5X

Modified opening position: Blue to play 21

I wonder what puzzle you're working on. ;)
