In Response To: Jake's History of Young Giants (Nack Ballard)

I think that matter of time will happen fairly soon. Backgammon is now a required course for incoming freshmen at GSU thanks to the success of our first course; here in there Chicago area there is a backgammon club with kids from 1st thru 4th grades and hopefully that idea will spread; and of course, in Japan they are starting clubs very early.

Lyle Rubin (recently interviewed on my web site) is, in my opinion, a solid intermediate player at 12 years of age with a coach like his father, David, future Giant status is certainly a possibility.

What I do find most interesting from my interviews with both you (Nack) and Jake and MCG is that it is possible for someone to play at the highest levels of the game in a very short period of time...maybe even in a year or two.

Perry and I have a student in Amsterdam, Martin Sterel, who came to us as a beginner and 6 months later was playing as well as most Open players. He continues to take lessons and improve.

Does that mean that backgammon is easier to master than, say, Chess, Bridge, Poker, Go, Othello, or gin? I don't feel fully qualified to answer that question relative to all those games, but having achieved a high level of play at both Bridge and Gin, I am convinced that Backgammon is much tougher to reach a high level quickly.
